The market for electric cars is growing and the development of charging infrastructure is key to promoting sustainable mobility. The use of electric cars is also increasing in Hungary and the charging network is expanding. What new technologies and opportunities can we expect in 2024?

I think one of the key development directions will be the emergence of island chargers. These are chargers that are only minimally connected to the electricity grid, with the charging energy coming almost entirely from their own energy source, such as solar or batteries.

These chargers have several advantages:

☑ Quick and easy to install, require no licensing or network upgrades.

☑ Flexible placement, even even in places where normal charging power is not available.

☑ Reduce the pressure on the network load on the network and increase system stability.

☑ Support renewable energy sources and reduce environmental impact.

Of course, island chargers also have disadvantages, such as such as high initial investment costs, or the need for system maintenance and and ongoing monitoring. But these challenges are offset by the long-term benefits, such as the predictability of capital costs and the exponential growth in the number of electric cars.

Financing island chargers is also becoming easier as next year there will be more government-subsidised and market-based credit and leasing schemes will be available for such projects. Meanwhile, ESCO financiers who will cover the cost of the investment and provide the share of the charging fees.

I think that island chargers represent a great opportunity for the development of the electric car and charger market, and we will see more and more of them in Hungary in 2024.
